There were over 80 entrants in the 2nd annual Frozen Motor Mayhem vintage snowmobile races at the Northern Maine Fairgrounds in Presque Isle last Saturday. This is up nearly double from last year and many racers were coming in from out of the area.
“A lot of hard work went into this. It’s all vintage snowmobile racing, except for the little kids class. We got the around forty of the little 120 sleds,” said race organizer, Rick Guerette. “There’s a stock and a modified class and they’re a blast to watch. There’s a class of ’73 and older. We added a new class this year of 1990 and older, you can run an engine up to 650 cc. Those sleds are readily available, they’re affordable, so that should be the biggest class of the day.”
Guerette says that hundreds of hours from local volunteers went in to prepping the track in front of the grandstand and organizing the race schedule. There were also about 150 local sponsors of the event. “Without our sponsors, this race wouldn’t happen.”
The bulk of the sleds racing were 1973 and older. “We also have a vintage snowmobile display. A lot of them are old racing sleds. It’s all stuff out of the 70’s and 80’s, even back into the 60’s. If you want a blast from the past this is the place to be, today.”
