E-Z Pass Scam E-Mail Circulating

A scam e-mail is now circulating that is masquerading as an E-Z Pass debt collector’s notice.
The e-mail reads:
Notice to Appear,
You have a unpaid bill for using toll road.
Please service your debt in the shortest possible time.
You can review the invoice in the attachment.
Kind regards,
Travis Montgomery,
E-ZPass Agent.
It then contains a zipped folder that the recipient has to open. This folder likely contains a computer virus so if received it should not be opened.
E-Z Pass does not send invoices via E-mail and a legal “Notice to Appear” is always delivered via either U.S. Certified Mail or in person by an off-duty Sheriff deputy.
The Fort Fairfield Journal recently received this e-mail and has notified the Maine Secretary of State’s office. Variations of the scam also come in with a sender called "State Court" but courts do not send official notices via E-mail.
If you receive any questionable e-mail from anyone demanding money or a “Notice to Appear” do not send any money or open any attachments as all E-mails of this nature are absolute scams.. Also, advise the Attorney General’s office of the scam immediately.
