ROBERT L. ASHFIELD

Fort Fairfield & Presque Isle – Robert L. Ashfield, 89, husband of Theresa M. (LaPointe) Ashfield, passed away Thursday morning, February 21, 2019 at a Presque Isle nursing facility. He was born February 17, 1930 in Tridelphia, WV, the son of Walter and Mary Ellen (Kirschner) Ashfield. Robert’s family moved to Charleston, South Carolina when he was child, and he was a graduate of the Charleston, SC school system. He served his country with the United States Navy then reenlisted with the United States Army Air Corps serving during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Robert was married to Theresa M. LaPointe on August 29, 1960, and following his discharge from the military became employed by the United States Civil Service at Loring Air Force Base until his retirement. Robert was a communicant of the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, Fort Fairfield. He was a member of the VFW Paul Lockhart Post Number 6187, Fort Fairfield, and the Wounded Warrior Project. He was instrumental with the maintenance of Harvest Meadows in Fort Fairfield while he lived there, and enjoyed visiting, socializing, and getting to know everyone he met. In addition to his parents, Mr. Ashfield was predeceased by one daughter, Sue Ellen Ashfield; and three brothers, James, Jerry and Joe Ashfield. He is survived by his wife of nearly 59 years, Theresa M. Ashfield of Presque Isle; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Barbara Ashfield of Fort Fairfield, Chris and Sue Ashfield of Toms River, NJ; one daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Larry Jenkins of Fort Fairfield; one brother, Donald Ashfield of Charleston, SC; five grandchildren and spouses, Samantha and Charles Ford of Stanley, NC, Michael Sherwood of Sanford, Tori Rogers of Toms River, NJ, Amanda and George Knox, Matthew Jenkins, all of Fort Fairfield; seven great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Friends called Monday, February 25, 2019 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, 147 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments was held after the Mass at the VFW Paul Lockhart Post Number 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield. Interment with military honors will take place later in the spring at the St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Fort Fairfield.
