JOHN F. HEROLD
Fort Fairfield – John F. Herold, 71, husband of Susann E. (Dietrich) Herold, passed away Monday afternoon, November 12, 2018 at a Presque Isle healthcare facility, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was born July 27, 1947 in Plattsburgh, New York, the son of Ross and Margaret (Montmorency) Herold. He graduated from high school in Plattsburgh, NY, and attended Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY where he received a degree in psychology and sociology. He also attended Trinidad State Junior College, Trinidad, Colorado for gunsmithing. John was married to Susann Dietrich on June 28, 1969 and served in the United States Army from 1969 to 1974, attaining the rank of Captain. He had been employed as a U.S. Customs agent at the Fort Fairfield and later the Houlton Ports of Entry, retiring after 30 years of service to his country. John served the Town of Fort Fairfield as a member of the Town Council for ten years, and as a member of the Housing Authority. He was a member of the Northern Maine Development Commission, the Fort Fairfield Historical Society, a founding member of the Fort Fairfield Rifle and Pistol Club, a member of the National Rifle Association and the Aroostook Amateur Radio Association. John was truly passionate about guns and gunsmithing. He also enjoyed history and photography. He was predeceased by his parents and is survived by his wife of 49 years, Susann E. Herold of Fort Fairfield; two daughters, Diana M. King of Bangor, Teresa S. Herold and her fiancé Jerry Parady Jr. of Fort Fairfield; one sister, Helen Herold of Worcester, MA; one grandson, Jonathan King of Bangor; several nieces and nephews. Friends called Friday November 16, 2018 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Saturday November 17, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, 147 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. Spring interment will take place at the St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments was held after the funeral service at the Knights of Columbus Hall Council No. 1753, 260 Main Street, Fort Fairfield.
