CHARLES J. “PUDGY” SMITH

Fort Fairfield – Charles J. “Pudgy” Smith, 66, husband of Sonia (O’Neal) Smith, passed away Friday evening, March 15, 2019 at Presque Isle healthcare facility, following an extended illness. He was born December 26, 1952 in Mars Hill, the son of George S. Smith Sr. and Lois Waldron Smith.  He was a graduate of the Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1971. Following graduation, Pudgy made his home with Wilton and Barbara Burtchell where he started his long career as a potato farmer. He later worked for other area farmers, was very proud of the many John Deere tractors he owned over the years and enjoyed snowmobiling.  He was predeceased by his father, George S. Smith Sr.; his mother, Lois (Waldron) Murphy; one sister, Jennifer Murphy. He is survived by his wife Sonia of Fort Fairfield; his stepfather, Charles B. “Toon” Murphy of Fort Fairfield; three brothers, George Smith Jr. and his wife Vicki of Westfield, Robert Smith of Presque Isle, Samuel Murphy and his companion Cindy Owens of Fort Fairfield; several nieces and nephews; and friends too numerous to list.  Friends called Tuesday March 19, 2019 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. A graveside service will be conducted later in the spring at the St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Fort Fairfield.
