Fort Fairfield Town Council Adopts

2nd Amendment Sanctuary Policy

Pledges Town as a “Sanctuary” Against, and

“Opposed to,” Any Unconstitutional Firearms

Executive Orders or Laws Passed by Feds or State

Fort Fairfield Journal, February 10, 2024

FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine - The Fort Fairfield town council approved Resolution 21-02 at their January, 2021 council meeting in support of the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.  The resolution expresses the council's opposition to any laws, federal or state, that would limit the right to keep and bear arms and also establishes the town as a sanctuary for those who wish to exercise those rights.  The essence of a sanctuary is that the town will not enforce any unconstitutional executive orders by the president or firearms laws, from the state or federal level, that would either restrict, or confiscate firearms within the confines of the town of Fort Fairfield.

The resolution was read into the record by Fort Fairfield town council chairman, Mitch Butler as follows:

“Whereas the 2nd Amendment of the United States Constitution reads, ‘A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed;’ and

“Whereas the Constitution of State of Maine arranged by Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court and approved by the Maine State Legislature resolve 2013, Chapter 75 pursuant to the Constitution of Maine, article X, section 6; and

“Whereas the Constitution of the State of Maine, Article I, Section 16 states, ‘Every citizen has a right to keep and bear arms and this right shall never be questioned.’  and

“Whereas the Town of Fort Fairfield council wishes to express its deep commitment to the rights of the citizens; and

“Whereas the town of Fort Fairfield Council wishes to further express opposition to any law that would unconstitutionally restrict the rights of our citizens to peacefully keep and bear arms; and

“Whereas the Fort Fairfield town council wishes to express its intent to stand as a sanctuary for the right to keep and bear arms within the limits of the Constitution of the United States of America and the State of Maine; and

“Now Therefore, we the town council of Fort Fairfield approve by resolve and declare its intent to oppose unconstitutional restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms for its citizens.

Town Councilor, Bob Kilcollins moved to accept the resolution. The motion was seconded by councilor, Scott Smith and there was no discussion.  The resolution passed unanimously.

Given the fact that the Democrats in Congress have introduced HR 127 to effectively abolish firearms ownership in the U.S. (see page 6 in this issue of FFJ), the Fort Fairfield town council may soon be put to the test to see just how serious their 2nd Amendment resolution is and to what extent they will go to protect  the firearms rights of people in Fort Fairfield.
