Professor of Meteorology Speaks Out:  The Climate Science is Not Settled!

By: David Deschesne
Fort Fairfield Journal, July 12, 2023 page 1

Dr. Ray Bates is another climate scientist in a long list of scientists who do not agree with the establishment, end-of-the-world narrative on climate that is being promoted by climate charlatans and ignorant government wonks in the media today. He was recently interviewed by GRIPT and said the science is not settled with regard to climate change.

Unlike those propped up by the biased establishment media, Dr. Bates is no climate flunky. He is Adjutant Professor at UCD, Dublin and was formerly professor of meteorology at Copenhagen University. He also worked at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and Met Éire Ann. His background degree was in physics and then he received a Ph. D. in meteorology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

“Perhaps the biggest misconception is that climate science is completely settled and there's no uncertainty,” said Bates who further remarked the new book, Unsettled by Steven Koonin shows a huge rift in the meteorological community with regard to climate change. “[Professor Koonin] has written this book pointing out that climate science is not a settled science and there is a risk in the longer term, certainly, but he doesn't go along with the view that we're in a climate emergency. Nor do I.”

Dr. Bates applied to be the representative to climate in a recent government study group in Ireland and was accepted. However, he was not allowed to participate in debates on climate policy because his views on climate did not align with the alarmist views of the people who control Ireland's government at the present time - people who have committed to reducing Ireland's CO2 output by 7 percent per year for the next ten years at a cost of 20 billion Euros per year to the Irish taxpayers there.

Dr. Bates thinks it's unfortunate and damaging to society for the alarmist view to be amplified such as it is in the media today. “I'm very concerned about the level at which teenagers are suffering from eco-anxiety and many teenagers feel the end of the world is nigh. I think this is not justified by the science and it's very unfortunate that young children should be terrified in this way. The scientific evidence doesn't justify this viewpoint.”

The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) continues to promote a warming trend of 3 degrees since the end of the last century, around 1850 to 1900. But, Dr. Bates has published a peer-reviewed paper that shows the number is actually closer to 1 degree of warming, or three times less than the political establishment's view. “I feel this is a valid line of evidence. It doesn't prove that climate sensitivity is 1 degree but it's a valid line of evidence which should have been included in the IPCC's assessment.”

There were other scientific papers that came to the same conclusion of 1 degree as Dr. Bates did, but they were not included in the IPCC report on climate change either, thus artificially biasing the international conversation toward a predetermined conclusion in favor of the climate alarmists' position.

Dr. Bates admits he is in the 97% of scientists who believe in man-made global warming via carbon dioxide emissions. “My paper is based on a warming due to carbon dioxide. So, I lie in the 97 percent who say global warming is caused by carbon dioxide. But the extent of it that I got from my model is less than the extent that is estimated by the IPCC. I'm in the majority but qualitatively my estimate is below what the IPCC says.”

Dr. Bates explained an intriguing bias in the IPCC in general since the IPCC is governed by bureaucratic bodies that are controlled by a majority of nations around the world who stand to grift a lot of money in the form of climate change payouts from wealthier Western, industrialized countries if the manmade climate change narrative is accepted as presented. Ergo, the conclusions of that organization's presentation of the data cannot be completely trusted.
Another cornerstone of evidence presented for manmade climate change by the climate change activists is the reduction in Arctic sea ice. However, Dr. Bates has studied the ice caps at both poles and wrote a report contradicting the establishment narrative. “One of the things that's been used most often in recent decades is to convey the impression that we were facing an emergency about the Arctic sea ice disappearing. Well, I've studied the Arctic sea ice - it's measured by satellite, you can look every day at what the coverage is. The Arctic sea ice decreased quite a bit between about 2000 and 2012, there was a very rapid drop.”

There were reports in 2006 and 2007, cited by self-appointed climate guru, Al Gore (who has no background or degree in meteorology, he's a politician by trade) that the summer sea ice would be gone by 2016. “Now, 2016 has long passed and the Arctic sea ice hasn't really decreased very much in the past 15 years,” said Dr. Bates. “There's been very little further decrease in the Arctic sea ice in September. It's still going down a little bit. The trend in the past 15 years is slightly downward, but it would take 200 years for it to reach zero at the current rate of decrease. I've looked at this in detail.”

He also researched the Antarctic (South Pole) sea ice and found the opposite taking place. “Now, the Antarctic, the models have been projecting the Antarctic sea ice would also decrease as a result of global warming but the opposite has happened,” Dr. Bates explained. “Since satellite observations came in in 1979 the average trend of sea ice in the Antarctic is slightly upwards and this year's is looking completely consistent with that. It's above normal, it's slightly upward.”

Dr. Bates wants to be clear that while the information he has obtained may contradict the establishment narrative, he still supports efforts to clean up the environment for posterity. “I'm completely a believer in a clean environment and in long term sustainability. I hate to see plastic pollution, the oceans covered with plastics, etc. and I am with the environmental activists in this area in trying to have a clean environment. But as a scientist, I have a responsibility to speak objectively about climate science and I think some of the climate activists are actually going too far. They're not taking an objective view of the scientific picture as it should be seen.”
