ALEXANDER REED ARMSTRONG

CAMPTON, New Hampshire—Alexander Reed Armstrong, 34, from Campton, New Hampshire lost his earthly life to an aggressive adenocarcinoma on March 4, 2019 while at home with his family.

   He was born the 29th of March, 1984, in Plymouth, New Hampshire, the beloved son of Drs. Andrew C.G. Armstrong and Nancy (Mraz) Armstrong.

   A lifelong inhabitant in Campton, Alex attended local schools, was home schooled, and was an honors graduate of Plymouth (NH) Regional High School.  He continued his education at Marine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine where he earned a degree in Marine Engineering.  While at Maine Maritime he served as both a squad leader and platoon leader for Alpha Company.  He was also actively involved in Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity, the Drama Club where he had starring roles, and the student section of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers where he served as President.

    As a Cost Guard Licensed Marine Engineering Officer, Alex sailed the Great Lakes and the Seven Seas, circumnavigating the globe.  He was employed in various engineering capacities by Tote Services, Inc.  Prior to Tote he had sailed for Maersk Lines, American Roll-On Roll-Off Carriers (ARC), Sealift, and the American Steamship Company.  Alex made many trips to the Middle East in support of the war effort and was awarded a Merchant Marine Expeditionary Medal for support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  He recently completed his credentials for rank of Chief Engineer.  Family and friends eagerly awaited his return from sea and tales of his adventures.

   A 22 year member of the Magic Blades Figure Skating Club, Alex was a talented figure skater often doing pairs routines with his sister.  He shared his love of skating with young and old and could frequently be found instructing and coaching for both the Magic Blades and the Plymouth State University figure skating programs.

   Alex’s computer savvy was known by many as he wrote computer programs for use by both the Maritime industry and local businesses.  A true engineer, he could fix anything and better yet was eager to teach others and always offering a helping hand.

   In addition to membership in the Magic Blades Figure Skating Club, Alex was a member of the Pemi Fish and Game Club, the American Maritime Officers, and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME).  He regularly attended SNAME conferences where he enjoyed being on the judging panel for student submitted research papers.  He was a frequent volunteer at the Frontier Heritage Historical Society and attendee of the United Parish Church.

   Off duty he could be found gardening, working on computers and equipment, or tractoring around the neighborhood.

   He was predeceased by his grandparents, Charles F. and Jacqueline (Gillies) Armstrong and Arthur J. and Ruth (Reed) Mraz.

   In addition to his parents, Alex is survived by his cherished sister, skating partner and best friend Dr. Addie E. R. Armstrong of Williamstown, Vermont, several aunts, uncles, cousins, and many loyal friends.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.
