VALMORE L. VARDAMIS
WESTFIELD - Val Vardamis, 82, passed away in Presque Isle on October 28, 2019. He was born on Nov. 29, 1937 in Mapleton, ME, the son of James and Gladys (Stevens) Vardamis.
Val’s father was in the military so Val attended the first two years of high school in Itazuke, Japan. Val often remarked that these two years in 1953-54 were the best two years of his life. Val later lived in Moon Township PA, and graduated high school in 1956 in Pittsburgh, Penn. Val lived in New York City from 1957-67. While in New York he worked as a page for Time Magazine, as well as signed a record contract with American Records and recorded a song called The Bosanova. Val was also a veteran, serving in both the U.S. Marines and U.S. Air Force. Val moved back to Maine and lived for a while in Bangor, Limestone, Fort Kent, Houlton, and for the past 15 years found his home at Southern Acres Boarding Home in Westfield. Val loved animals, especially cats, and took care of the resident cat at Southern Acres. He loved bird watching, photography, reading, and writing. He was a contributing writer to the Fort Fairfield Journal, and published a newsletter for Southern Acres. Val liked to study different religions, and often talked of spiritual leaders, including the Indian Spiritual Master Meher Baba, whose writings were a big influence on him. Val is survived by his brother James Vardamis of Bangor, and two nieces Julie and Katrina. He is also survived by the staff and residents of Southern Acres Boarding Home whom he considered his family, as well as his close friend Herb Boutilier of Smyrna Mills, Maine. A graveside service was held at the Veterans Cemetery in Caribou on Tuesday, November 5 at 1 PM.
